Ö: Hi everyone, and welcome to Balcast. I’m Ömer Kotan

N: I’m Neva Dikmen

E: I’m Ecrin Akdemir

D: And I’m Defne Öztürk

Ö: In this episode, we have a special guest from Indonesia.

N: He is an exchange student and he has been here for two months now. And today, we are going to ask him some questions.

D:Hi Joshua, welcome to our podcast. How are you?

J:I’m good, thank you for asking. How about you?

D: I’m fine thank you, and we have some questions for you.

E: First of all, please introduce yourself to us; your name, your age, your hobbies, where you came from and the purpose of AFS.

J: So, hello everyone. My name is Joshua Albert Pattikawa, I am 17 years old and I’m from Indonesia. My hobby is to play basketball and the purpose of my AFS exchange program is for students to experience intercultural interaction and to reach to different cultures to achieve a cultural understanding.

E: That’s great.

D: Can you talk about your culture?

J: I would say that Indonesian culture is very interesting because first of all ,we have a lot of beliefs from our heritage and from ancient times. And also the next thing is that Indonesian people are very religious people .So the norms, the rules, the unwritten rules, the cultural rules are based on religious parts and also we feel respect a lot because of the differences.

N: Okay, do you think you can give an example to those norms?

J: So, for religious norms I would give an example as a Christian because I’m a Christian. For example before we do anything, like before we eat, before we get off- get out off the house, after we get back from somewhere else to the house ; we have to pray.

D: And then, what about Indonesian food?

J: Indonesian food,so first I would say that Indonesian food is so spicy. We use spices, especially chili peppers in all of our dishes. And also we have rice for all the meals; for lunch- breakfast, lunch and dinner we include rice with all of them. And also we love sea food, fish.

E: So, do you eat that much rise in Turkey too?

J: No in Turkey, I noticed that the people rarely eat rice but instead of rice they have yogurt and bread for every meal.

D: And briefly your daily life?

J: So how does your daily life look like;especially ,the school days. On weekdays is I woke- wake up everyday at 5 am because the school Igo to goes in at 6 am. So, I get up and go to school. And then we- I study at school ‘till 11.55 .We get out of school. And then I go home for lunch. And then I have some courses, extra courses for the university exam. And then, after that I go home ,have dinner and go to my basketball club and have training. After 6 pm, I go home and then I take a rest.

Ö: And what about your weekends?

N: Yeah, what about them?

J: So in my weekends, I usually get up late maybe 10 or 11 am. And then I have courses in the morning ‘till 3 pm. And then I get out. And I hang out with my friends ’till- until  evening. And then I go back to my house for a movie night with my family. That’s basically how my weekends look like.

Ö: So, could you tell us about your experiences in Turkey and your thoughts so far?

J: So far in my experiences in Turkey I love it. And  Turkish people especially, they are so nice and friendly. Friends at my school are friendly ,too. They are so friendly and welcoming.

Ö: So, what was the first thing that made you surprised?

J: So, my biggest culture shock, if you could say that, is the food. For me, I found it interesting that Turkish people combine yogurt with everything, almost everything. The most interesting is I found it very shocking that even you guys drink yogurt, ayran. And then you mix yogurt with pasta. I found that very interesting.

D: And what’s the biggest difference between Indonesia and Turkey?

J: The most noticeable difference and the biggest difference I would say especially in this time of the year is the weather. Because in Indonesia we have only two seasons. It isthe summer and rainy season. It’s either really hot or it’s rainy heavily and in Turkey you guys have winter so that’s the biggest difference I would say.

E: Can you please talk about your education system?

J: So the education system in Indonesia is a bit different from the Turkey education system. The first thing is the school years. In Indonesia, we have 6 years of primary school and then 2 years of middle school and then another 3 years of high school. And then the school hours are also different especially in my school in Indonesia we get in school at 6 am in the morning and then we go home at 11.55.

E: And what donyou think about our school?

J: I would say the pros is the students here are really nice and welcoming and friendly. The teachers are also really lovely. And cons I would say that the school hours here are way too long because you go home at 3.45 in the evening .I think that’s way too long. I would say that maybe because in Indonesia our school hours compared to here are very short.

Ö: What and who do you miss the most from your country?

J: What I missed the most I would probably say the beaches. Especially in my city the beaches are so beautiful and I missed it. And who do I miss the most ?I would probably say my family ,especially my mom.

N: So Joshua, one last question: If it was possible ,would you stay in Turkey longer?

J: Tabi ki abi, manyak mısınız!

(Everyone laughs)

N: Alright Joshua thank you for sharing your experiences with us. We’ve learned a lot from you and had so much fun, I also hope that you had a great time here. That was all for today thank you for listening!
